3 Major Environmental Worldviews

People all over the world have different views on the environment and how we as humans reside on the planet. Some people believe that there is no end to the resources available because we are a predominant cunning species. Others are on the complete other side of the spectrum where they believe we are just visitors here and we need to take care of this place. There are three major environmental worldviews; planetary management, stewardship, and environmental wisdom. Planetary management, which is an anthropocentric worldview, can be best described as being apart from nature. It is based on humans wants and needs and taking from the environment. This worldview believes that humans can do whatever they desire and take advantage of the earths …show more content…

This worldview believes if we take care of the earth, our resources will not expire, but we should not be wasting them. We need rules and regulations to prevent people from wasting and polluting otherwise the human race will not be successful in our future generations. The last worldview is environmental wisdom. This is the complete opposite from planetary management. This worldview believes we completely rely on the the environment and its not for only us, but for every living organism as well. It is not ours to take and abuse, but use in moderation. They believe that resources are limited and we need to discourage waste and refrain from using things that harm the environment. We need to cooperate with the earth instead of taking advantage and spoiling is precious …show more content…

I do not agree with the planetary worldview because our resources are exhaustible. We are well over carrying capacity in America and they will be depleted if we continue to abuse our resources. Oil is a good example. Oil can’t last forever, especially with the high demand of oil needed here in America. Some people say we’ve already reached peak oil and already oil is in decline. It may not run out in my lifetime, but I believe it will someday. As for being able to fix all the problems around us, oil is also ruining everything from climate change, to clean water, to air quality, and to kill animals and their ecosystems. Oil spills are devastating for our marine environments. The BP oil spill in 2010 was absolutely tragic. There were billions of barrels spilled into the ocean and the damage that was done is irreversible. There is still oil left in the ocean from that incident. No one was able to completely fix that problem. As for climate change, that’s still a huge problem and its still getting worse. We are not living sustainably. We need to use more electric cars, ride bicycles, walk, do anything to try to stop relying on oil. I appreciate the stewardship worldview but I just can’t be on board with that view only because of the shape our environment is in now. I can’t see the earth healing itself with that worldview because too much damage it already done. Also, I feel having the right management still
