In a tragic series of events, 36 year old Gaven Brooks was brutally murdered, by means of a single gunshot to the back of his head, and later found in a field twenty miles north of the town he lived in. Investigators are trying to piece together exactly what happened by using the evidence gathered from the crime scene, and from information given to them by means of close friends and relatives. The evidence collected were wine glasses, paper plates filled with half eaten food, a cigarette butt, a yellow queen-sized sheet, a bottle of red wine, shoe print markings left in the dirt road, and Mr. Brooks’ car which was found abandoned in a parking lot in downtown Centerville. There are six potential suspects all of which are female, the list includes …show more content…
His remains were found at around 7:30 p.m., but forensic scientists estimate that his time of death occurred around 4:20 p.m. Mr. Gaven’s body was found facing upwards on a yellow queen-sized sheet with a single gunshot to the back of his head. This means that the cause of death was a gunshot wound, whereas the manner of death is homicide. Forensic investigators were able to identify the time of death by using any of the following methods. Firstly, investigators could use body temperature to determine time of death. For example algor mortis occurs as a result of body temperature loss. It states that a body loses heat at a rate of 1 to ½ degrees Fahrenheit per hour until it matches the temperature of the environment. With that being said, they can use that math to go back in time and find out roughly when Mr. Brooks took his last breath. An investigator can also use the state in which the body is in. If the body is in liver mortis, which is the settling of blood in the body, that can be used to shorten the time gap of death. In this case, Mr. Brooks’ body was found before it settled into the stage of rigor mortis which is the shortening of the muscle tissue and stiffening of the body. This stage usually occurs within the first 24 hours, and dissipates within 36 hours. Along with this, investigators can use the digestion of Mr. Brooks’ last meal (which was chicken, potato salad, chocolate cake, and deviled eggs) to determine at when he died. (Saferstein,
