Suspense is something the author of a story can use to keep the story interesting and exciting. Poe uses suspense to keep the reader interested in the story and to keep them reading on. The Raven crafts the idea of suspense by using a range of different types of literary features. The use of hyperboles creates more suspense because the more exaggeration used grips the reader in more. Describing the Raven as “Ghastly, Grim and ancient” (8) makes the idea that the author is trying to get through, more coherent as Poe is offering more description. The way Poe repeats his “Sorrow for the lost Lenore” (2) helps embed the idea that he misses Lenore but it also makes the reader wonder where she went, why she left and why she is so important, which creates suspense. The way Poe uses repetition and pathos when he is trying to get an idea through is very prominent.
The setting and pacing created suspense because the narrator was telling the story at a fast pace. He was being very careful while placing the lantern. He would use words such as cautiously and very slowly, which creates suspense (Poe 1). When he would use the word “cautiously” he would usually refer to undoing the lantern. When the narrator would use the word “very slowly” , he would so what he was doing very slowly and careful so he wouldn't wake up the old man.
Notice how the narrator crafts his struggle around abandoning life and reason. Is the use of suspense effective in Poe’s short story? Why or Why not? Yes, suspense is effective in this short story.
“A watch's minute hand moves more quickly than did mine.” (Poe,1834)- death was close for the old man. “It was the beating of the old man's heart.” (Poe,1834)- the old man’s fear built up courage in the narrator. “When I had waited a long time, very patiently, without hearing him lie down, I resolved to open a little --a very, very little crevice in the lantern.
The narrator believes himself to be very intelligent and clever when he goes into the old man’s room at midnight. Poe’s word choice of “caution” and “how wisely” represents the man’s view of his own sanity. Yet the act he performs and the reasoning behind his murderous intention convinces the reader that the narrator has lost his sanity. He plots and is driven to kill a man after claiming, “ I loved the old man.
This is also shown on page 173 and it states, “ I had my head in, and was about to open the lantern, when my thumb slipped upon the tin fastening, and the old man sprang up in the bed, crying out-“Who’s there?”. This creates suspense because, the reader knows that the narrator has already came into the old man’s room for seven days before this. Although, each one of those nights the man was asleep so the eye was closed, but now he’s and his eye is open and the narrator would only kill him if his vulture eye was open. This then causes the reader to feel anxious and many other emotions that suspense would give you.
But every time he goes into his room at night the eye is closed, he was no motivation to kill him. So, one night he accidentally wakes up the old man, shines the light on his hideous eye, and is consumed with anger. He finally took action and killed him. Poe uses suspense,a state or feeling of excitement or anxious uncertainty about may what happened. He uses characteristic anxiety, vivid words, and repetition.
Through the entire story, Poe had it so the reader always knew something was going to happen, but constantly question when and what. “The Tell Tale Heart” continually makes the reader think and sparks a certain interest. With all we know about Poe and his many works, we 're hit with suspense and anticipation by the first part of the story. Later in the tale, the narrator slows down and reveals his preparations that lead to the murder in such a deliberately enticing and suspenseful way, that even though you knew what was going to happen, it was still intense and suspenseful to read.
