After 15 seasons of producing the most talented singers, the show finally came to an end in 2016. This talent-search show launched many of the contestants’ careers including Broadway, music, television, and movies. Having been a big fan of the show, here are our favorite black contestants on the show. 1. Jennifer Hudson (Season 3) – Hudson is the perhaps the most successful American Idol contestant. Fantasia Barrino (Season 3) – Barrino came from North Carolina and won the hearts of the judges during her audition. Her raspy and soulful voice gave judges and the audience a unique performance every time she hit the stage. Her most memorable performance was when she sang her own version of Summertime. This is why it wasn’t a surprise when she won during her season. She later on became a gospel and R&B artist. Barrino received a Grammy Award and even starred in her own television biopic, The Fantasia Barrino Story: Life is Not a Fairy Tale. 3. Ruben Studdard (Season 2) – Studdard won the title during his season. He was later on nominated for a Grammy Award and produced six albums. Studdard focused on R&B and gospel music. He also produced several best-selling albums including a platinum debut album called Souful. Studdard also ventured to acting and played roles in various television programs, cameo appearances in movies, and performed in Broadway productions. 4. Jordin Sparks (Season 6) – At the young age of 16, Sparks stepped on the stage of American Idol and was declared the winner towards the end of the season.
