50 Shades of Death In the novel by Markus Zusak titled The Book Thief, Death is the narrator of the story. The book is about a nine year old girl who lives in Germany. When she finds her new home with her new foster family, she learns to read from a friendly house painter, Hans. Hans teaches Liesel how to read and write, and a very good friendship begins. Liesel’s new family already struggles as it is, but then things get worse when they take in a Jewish boy to shelter from the Nazis. This Jewish boy’s father saved Hans’s life, and Hans feels like it is his responsibility to save his son’s life now. Liesel lives on a house that sits on Himmel Street in Molching, Nazi Germany. The book takes place in the years 1939 to 1948, back in Hitler’s reign. While the town Liesel lives in is fictional, Hitler’s rule is accurate. Nazis ruled Germany at this point of history, so the book is actually more factual than not. The narrator of the story is Death. Many people think Death is a heartless, wondering soul who works for the devil. In this novel, however, Death is a humorous and sarcastic being that loves colors. Throughout the story words and knowledge seem to go hand in hand.Words and stories hold a tremendous amount of value throughout the entire book. The power of words is responsible for many friendships as well. Learning of the alphabet is how Hans and Liesel began their amazing friendship. Another bond that was formed through the power of words was when Liesel described the weather outside to Max. Max even gives Liesel a story called, The Word Shaker.
