It is considered common knowledge that pigs wallow in the mud. Why? The obvious reason is to regulate the body temperature. However, Marc Bracke from the Wageningen University and Research Centre has discovered that there may be more to why pigs wallow. Bracke found that pigs roll in the mud to regulate body temperature as well as remove parasites and protect their skin from the sun (Braconnier, 2011). Rooting is also a common practice of pigs.
