This year in textile technology, we have based our studies around fashion and culture in the 1960’s. The changes made during this era and the people involved have affected society majorly. The 60’s had a whirlwind of events, such as the Black Civil Rights Movement, the beginning of second wave feminism, as well as an extreme jump in Music, Art and Fashion. These all influenced the design of clothing and the acceptance of things that had never been seen before like the Mini Skirt. ‘DESIGN IS EVERYWHERE’. In this report I will be focusing on the design elements in clothing, especially those worn by teenagers. The key elements of which I will be concentrating on throughout this report are Line, Colour, and Shape, which were used prolifically during the 1960’s. This is an extraordinarily important design element as it is used in every garment and item. This year we have studied line within the construction and research of Ruffles, Peter Pan Collars, Pleats, Mini Skirts, Paisley Print and A-line dresses. These all use different forms of line to create a visual effect and also influence our psychological association with garments, for example Pleats use vertical lines which we link with sophistication and strength. I find it interesting that within garments different types of line can be used that may have contradictory associations which would instantly grab our attention. In my dress which I made in class incorporated both vertical line in the pleats and undulating lines in the hem which is related to being gentle, fluid and graceful.
