Youth is the most important time period a person goes through. It is the age that you live and learn. In the story “A and P” by John Updike, Sammy shows many signs of an adolescent. It is believable that Sammy is a part of the youth age by the control of his thoughts, focus, and dedication. In this story Sammy makes many mistakes that people learn from in their teenage years. Sammy would be considered an adolescent because of how he thinks. He does not have control of what he thinks, but he can control if those thoughts consume him or not. Just like most teenage boys, Sammy thinks about girls. When three young girls in bathing suits walk in the grocery store where he works, he cannot stop thinking about them. He talks to himself in his head and goes over every detail of the girls. For example, he says, “The one that caught my eye was the one in the plaid green two piece” (Updike 294). He is supposed to be working but he cannot help but think about the girls. He then begins to focus on just one of the girls that seems to be the queen bee. He does not know these girls, but he called the leader of the group Queenie. He describes her in his head as “The queen. She kind of led them, the other two peeking around and making their shoulders round” (Updike 294). He likes this about her.
