Selena was born to Mexican parents, Abraham Quintanilla and Marcella Ofelia Samora, on April 16th, 1971 in Lake Jackson, TX. She was the youngest of 3. Her older brother was called Abraham and her older sister was called Suzette. Selena started singing at 3 years old, she started singing in both English and Spanish when she was 6, even though she didn’t know how to speak Spanish at the time. Her father started a family group called “Selena Y Los Dinos”. Suzette played drums and AB played bass and produce and write many of Selena’s songs. Selena Y Los Dinos first performance was in 1980 at her father’s restaurant “Papa Gayos”. Papa Gayos soon then went bankrupt. The Quintanilla family packed up and moved to Corpus Christi. Selena recorded her first album called “Selena Y Los Dinos” in 1984. In 1986, Selena Y Los Dinos released an album called Alpha. Also in 1986, Selena was discovered by two huge names in the Tejano music industry. In 1991, her duet with Salvadoran singer Alvaro Torres “Buenos Amigos” became her first hit. The next year, she released an album called “Entre a Mi Mundo” which also went gold. “Entre a Mi Mundo” contained one of her biggest songs “Como La Flor”. Selena married Chris Perez, the lead guitarist of Los Dinos, on April 2nd, 1992. In 1993, she won a Grammy for Best Mexican-American performance for her album “Selena Live”.
