According to Theodore de Bry's engraving of the Massacre at Jamestown, it is shown that the Natives were savage and barbaric. The encounters between the Natives and the Colonists had been growing tense for some time before the Massacre occurred. The colony of Jamestown’s population had risen to over one thousand two hundred people between sixteen nineteen and sixteen twenty-two. In March of sixteen twenty-two the Natives decided to attack the colonists; killing over three hundred forty seven colonist. The engraving shows the Natives killing men, women, and children. Some people may argue that the Natives where barbaric for their reactions to the colonists invasions, but I disagree. The colonist issued a counter-attack on the natives to rid the natives of the Region. The counter- attack killed hundreds of Natives. In my opinion, if the natives were considered barbaric for their reactions to the colonists’ intensive control of lands that was once theirs, than the colonist should also be considered barbaric. The colonist could have reacted more maturely about the situation. The colonist could have created a peace treaty with the natives instead of just counter-attacking them killing more people. In my opinion, this would’ve just caused more conflict with the Natives. The native was protecting what they thought was right. In today’s world that is still occurring, such as Ferguson, Massachusetts. In Ferguson people burned down buildings of businesses because they didn’t agree with the outcome of a trial. In my opinion, the natives attack was kind of like that of Ferguson. The natives didn’t agree to how they were being treated and how their land which was rightfully theirs got taken from them. The natives were standing up for what they believed. If it’s barbaric and unhuman to stand up for what one believes than everyone would be barbaric. Everyone stands up for what they believe is right. It’s a right to be able to express yourself. The Natives expressed that they wanted their land back. If that’s barbaric so be it. I agree that the attack wasn’t the most civilized thing to do, but the native and colonist couldn’t communicate very well it was the natives only choice to get their opinion about the invasion of their lands to the
