A Brief Review Of Hiroshima By Dr. Fujii

On August 6, 1945, the united states created history by dropping the first-ever nuclear weapon on Hiroshima. To end the costly war quickly, the US government needed Japan to surrender and decided to drop the bomb during World War II. In order to prevent further American casualties during the invasion of japan, President Truman authorized the launch of the atomic bomb. In the following year, the bomb led to the death of around 140,000 people, and in the following years, radiation sickness and other ailments caused tens of thousands more to pass away. Dr. Masakazu Fujii was one of the six bombing survivors the author John Hersey interviewed to research his book "Hiroshima". Dr. Fujii's depiction of the devastating effects of the atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima was chosen by Hersey because it offered a first-person view. In addition, Dr. Fujii's tale demonstrated the Japanese people's tenacity in the face of such terrible destruction. …show more content…

Fujii's account in part because he saw the bombing's immediate and long-term effects on the human body. Dr. Fujii was in a unique position to observe and describe the physical harm the bomb had caused because of his training as a doctor. Dr. Fujii was shocked by the severity of the damage and the gruesomeness of the injuries. Hersey claims, "The severity of the injuries they had to treat caught the Hiroshima doctors and nurses off guard. Nothing like it had ever been seen before " (Heresy, 19). Hersey illustrates the catastrophic effects of nuclear weapons and the enormous human suffering they result in through Dr. Fujii's account. The descriptions of the victims' injuries are harrowing and poignant, and they serve as a powerful reminder of the devastating impact of the atomic
