The story The Jungle is about a man named Jurgis Rudkus and his family, who are immigrants who came from Lithuanian to America to work in the meatpacking plants of Chicago. The Jungle is a story with factual events occurring with fictional characters participating in them. The story follows Jurgis and his family while they face multiple difficulties including unhuman and dangerous working conditions, living in poverty, starvation. The story begins at Jurgis’s wedding where he marries a women named Ona Rudkus. Marija Berczynskas is the director of the wedding, and a man named Tamoszius Kuszleika provided music on his violin. Jurgis and his wife Ona are originally from the countryside of Lithuania. Since Jurgis and Ona were not allowed to marry in Lithuania and also since Ona 's father had died, leaving the couple with little to no money, Jurgis decided to move his own along with Ona 's family to America. Jonas, who is Jurgis 's brother, told Jurgis of one of his friends who made a fortune while working in Chicago which sets Jurgis’s mind on moving to Chicago. Upon arriving in America the family discovers that while the wages are higher, so are the prices. While in Chicago, the family lived in a cluttered and corrupt slum of the area. Part of the neighborhood was built upon a garbage dump, and the entire part of the city reeked like garbage and was filled horribly with flies. Jurgis still felt as though he still had much potential in this new land, however. Jurgis decided to go to the meatpacking plant and immediately was hired to a job sweeping blood and insides from slaughtered livestock through a drain.
