Give a brief summary of the current state of union relations in the airlines industry in the United States. Recently there has been a shift in the relationship between the unions and management in the airlines industry. Instead of the unions fighting against the airline management for increased pay, benefits etc., they are instead joining forces to protect US airlines against their overseas rivals. For one reason, Gulf Carriers such as Qatar Airways, Emirates, and Etihad are beginning to monopolize the overseas market in the airline industry (Clampet, 2015). Less than 10 years ago, there was only one flight a day from the US to Qatar. However, today the three carriers above operate 25 daily non-stop flights from the US to the Gulf, (Britton, 2015). The “TWU-IAM Association will immediately begin serving as lawful collective bargaining representatives for Fleet Service, Mechanic and Related, and Stores employees at the new American Airlines” (M2 Communications, 2015). How does this affect the US Airlines industry? The joint administrators will be a voice for bargaining union members and support the fight in the global economy. “NMB ruled on April 15, 2015 that American was operating as a single carrier for all groups covered by the Associations' filing” (M2 Communications, 2015). What this ruling does is to create strength in the union and “Associations can now get down to the business of negotiating the industry's best contracts that our members deserve," (M2 Communications, 2015).
