A Career As An Art Director And Journalist

A person’s career is one of the most defining characteristics of his or her life. When determining a career path to follow, this can be a rather daunting thought. As someone overwhelmed by the multitude of career fields, researching careers one or two at a time should help me learn more about what I want from a career and what each career entails. I have chosen two careers to initially research: Art Director and Journalist. The largest factor in deciding on a career path is how much satisfaction and enjoyment I would find in my daily work. By studying information on the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, I found that I would enjoy seven of the nine tasks routinely performed by art directors. The duties I would enjoy in this career fall in two categories: working with art or working with people. While working with art, I would determine how to visually represent ideas and concepts, decide which design elements to use in the representation, and develop the overall look of publications and video entertainment sets. As a part of working with people, I would lead the design staff, discuss design and style with clients, and coordinate activities between departments. However, the Bureau of Labor Statistics additionally listed two responsibilities I would not find as satisfying. According to The Houston Chronicle, Reporters and correspondents primarily need skill in oral and written communication, grammar and punctuation, technology, and research. I am certainly capable of utilizing each of these skills. Thinking quickly, adaptability, people skills, patience, and critical thinking are abilities also needed for this field. My short patience and wavering people skills, however, may hinder my ability to find success in this type of career. Journalists of any type must value truth and privacy, which I believe matches me
