A Certain Hunger The book A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers is a prison memoir written from the perspective of a cannibalistic renowned food critic. This novel is unique in my opinion because Dorothy Daniels, the main character, murders her boyfriends since she believes it is essential for her journey to self-discovery. By making a five-star meal out of them afterwards, she feels a sort of connection to her ex-lovers and it alleviates a sense of loss the average person would experience after a breakup. Dorothy does not hate men, on the contrary, she loves them so much that she wants to carry a part of them with her forever. “We all lay claims to John Donne’s metaphysical, clock-ticking, carpe-diem action, but it’s habit’s reassuring arms we seek.” (pg. 203) In this sentence, Dorothy is referring to her most recent crime and wondering if her lover would have done anything differently if he knew his life would come to an end in mere weeks. This statement resonated with me because it is true that as humans we find it hard to “seize the day” purely out of habit. Summers chose her words very carefully, almost in a way to make her readers crave more of her illustrative writing style, which I think makes this sentence so
