The play A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley by Israel Horovitz is about a greedy old man named Ebenezer Scrooge who meets ghosts that show him events that happened or will happen in his lifetime. In this essay, I will tell you about what happened when Scrooge encountered the spirits and how that shaped him throughout the play. At the beginning of the play, you can see in paragraph 10 of scene 2 that Scrooge is a cold-hearted old man because he says that anyone who says “Merry Christmas” should be boiled alive and buried with a steak through their heart. You can also tell that Scrooge doesn’t like Christmas because, in the same paragraph, Scrooge says, “What’s Christmas time to you but a time of paying bills without any money; a time for finding yourself a year older, but not an hour richer.” That shows, that at the time, he only cared about how much money he had in his pocket. When he sees this, he freaks out and tells Future to show him something else. Future takes Scrooge into town where they see businessmen talking about his funeral and how they believe no one is going to come. After he sees all of that he has a moment of realization that he doesn’t want to die not being liked by anyone. Future shows him the death of Tiny Tim and that he died because they weren’t able to afford a doctor. Scrooge feels bad because he knows what it’s like to lose someone important.
