Critical Analysis “Contents of the Dead Man’s Pocket” by Jack Finney is an excellent short story. Finney’s main character, Tom Benecke, is an ambitious young man married to Claire, tom spends a lot of his free time working rather than with her. One evening while Tom is alone , working, a valuable piece of paper flies out the window. He makes the terrible decision to go out on the ledge after the piece of paper, and a nerve-wracking adventure ensues. The three most important literary elements to “Contents of the Dead Man’s Pocket” are external conflict, internal conflict, and suspense.

“Cathedral” The essay “Cathedral”, by Robert Carver, is about a man who is unsure of a blind gentleman named Robert that is coming to stay in his home for the weekend. His wife met Robert when she was reading to the blind. The narrator of the story who remains unnamed through the essay is not happy about Robert coming to stay in his home. He thought all blind people were the same and Robert taught him what it was like to be blind.
Three men burst through the door and shined a light in the couple’s eyes yelling, “Why are you sleeping in the same bed? That’s illegal!” The Lovings offered their marriage license. “That’s not worth anything here,” the sheriff said. He made the couple get out of bed only to arrest and handcuff them.
However, the story takes an unpredicted and meaningful turn at the end when the narrator see things from a blind man’s standpoint. Since the beginning of the story, the narrator does not like the idea of having in his house a blind man. He does not know how to socialize with blind people because his idea of blindness came from the movies. He thinks blind people move slowly and they never laugh.
However, the older waiter understands the old man, this waiter says, “You do not understand. This is a clean and pleasant café. It is well lighted. The light is very good (Hemingway 10).” When the old waiter says that the café is well lighted I think that the light could represent human interaction and friendship because that is something the old man lacks.
It is somehow hard for us to discover the beauty of nature in Hong Kong, the hustle and bustle city. Only when we put the work or stress away temporarily, can we truly feel how beautiful the place we are living is. As a pessimistic person, I often get stressed easily. Usually I would put myself in a quiet place, away from the crowds and the hardship I am facing. Tai Po Waterfront Park is the place that cheers me up.
