Ernest Hemingway’s short story, “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place”, is a uniquely written story, that takes place in a cafe with an old man, that is always drinking at the cafe’s bar while two waiters are there serving him. There is a young waiter, and an older waiter. While the older waiter is okay with the old man staying to drink, and is kind and patient with him, the younger waiter, is eager to go home, and is rude to the old man, and kicks him out. Hemingway’s use of diction, tone, and organization through these characters creates a depressing atmosphere. The tone Hemingway uses in his short story helps develop the atmosphere in that, the tone emits a depressing feeling, for instance, when the younger waiter talks about the old man, “Last week he tried to commit suicide.”(Hemingway 157) This is depressing because they’re talking about an old man, who wants to kill himself. Another example is when the younger waiter says to the old man, “You should have killed yourself last week.”(Hemingway 157) This is depressing because the old man tried to commit suicide, and the younger waiter is essentially promoting the old to attempt to commit suicide once again. The tone the younger waiter expresses to the old man is unexpected to what is thought about a waiter, because he is rude to his customer and kicks him out.
