A common sense understanding of sociology of the general population would be that is we socialise in groups with common interests, for example within a sport or career prospects. The common sense of what the population see sociology as differ from what sociology actually is as it is the study of human society as a whole and the groups that we live in. The distinction between this and other social sciences is that sociology is attempts to explain human behaviour looking at a wider scale.
