Conflict is when a character in a piece of literature faces something that opposes their desires and needs. In the selections, The Boston Girl, and Sybil Ludington’s Ride, the main characters struggle against their parents for their wellbeing. The girls, Addie and Sybil, feel like they can do more than what others say, but their parents feel it is dangerous and do not believe in them. The protagonists do what they believe in and have to face their parents and prove them wrong. Due to the parents concerning about their children, the main characters have to prove themselves worthy of the tasks at hand, allowing the conflict to erupt, man versus man.
Released September 29, 1950, Sunset Boulevard is a film noir of a forgotten silent film star, Norma Desmond, that dreams of a comeback and an unsuccessful screenwriter, Joe Gillis, working together. Ultimately an uncomfortable relationship evolves between Norma and Joe that Joe does not want a part of. Sunset Boulevard starts off with an establishing shot from a high angle shot with a narrative leading to a crime scene shot in long shot (a dead body is found floating in a pool). The narrative throughout the film established a formalist film. Cinematography John F. Seitz used lighting and camera angles in such a way to create a loneliness and hopefulness atmosphere.

For the final project I chose to make a short movie that relates in theme to the book Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenrhich. The short movie used different forms of media to illustrates poverty. Thought the movie I focus on seven different topics under the category of poverty. I start with the dream of wealth and why people work hard. Then, I move on to the current situation of people out of work and without jobs followed by the debt that is holding many people back.
A Raisin in the Sun PBA Unit 2 Cinematography and filmmaking are art forms completely open to interpretation in many ways such lighting, the camera as angles, tone, expressions, etc. By using cinematic techniques a filmmaker can make a film communicate to the viewer on different levels including emotional and social. Play writes include some stage direction and instruction regarding the visual aspect of the story. In this sense, the filmmaker has the strong basis for adapting a play to the big screen. “A Raisin in the Sun” is a play by Lorraine Hansberry that debuted on Broadway in 1959.
The story “Where Are You Going Where Have You Been”, By Joyce Carol Oates takes place during the summer time of 1966. The story is set in several locations for example the house, the car, and the movies. In the story it’s the summer time and connie goes through some rough patches with her mom. Connie is fifteen years old and is a freshman in high school. Her mother constantly tells her that her older sister June who is 24, is better than her and wants her to be more like her.
One of the most audacious Hollywood films of the late 1970s was ‘All That Jazz’ and the music to match was just as cheeky. Music used throughout the film in ‘All That Jazz’, some of the songs had a very 80 's beat, which of course was en vogue when it was made. It combined musical theatre and elaborate flights of fancy to enthralling effect, employing a wide range of musical styles and compositions in the process. The music style used divides its time between jazzy pop classics ("Everything Old Is New Again" and "On Broadway") and a combination of classics handled by composer/arranger Ralph Burns. The jazzy pop songs made for fun listening from classical music, lushly-orchestrated pop classics to easy listening styled songs.
The film 13th directed by Ava DuVernay targets an intended audience of the Media and the three branches of the United States government with an emphasis that mass incarceration is an extension of slavery. It is intended to inform viewers about the criminalization of African Americans and the United States prison boom. 13th uses rhetorical devices in its claim to persuade the viewers by using exemplum in the opening seconds of the film. President Barack Obama presents statistics, saying “the United States is home to 5% of the world’s population but is home to 25% of the world’s prisoners.” Also the film uses a hyperbole in talking about the movie Birth of a Nation produced in 1915 which portrays a black man as a violent savage who will kill white women.
The films Rocky (1976) and Live and Let Die (1973) were made during a Hollywood era called Blaxploitation. Blaxploitation films were made in the early 1970s and specifically attracted an urban black audience. Even though they were meant for a specific audience, Blaxploitation films soon gained recognition from all audiences. These two films fit in to this classification of Blaxploitation because both of these films take place in black communities. Taking place in these communities allow these films to appeal to the black community.
Narrative is generally accepted as possessing two components: the story presented and the process of its telling. A story can be presented in two basic ways, as a linear narrative and as a non-linear narrative. Linear narratives follow a straight line and non-linear narratives usually start at in the middle or in the height of conflict. Casablanca and Memento are two films which contrast in narrative approaches.
Also, another interesting similarity is seen with how the people look up to their leader in their societies. In 1984, people see Big Brother as someone who is doing the right thing. Big Brother is seen to be a “saviour” in the eyes of many people in 1984 (Orwell, 2008, p. 18). Then in Snowpiercer, the rebels are constantly told the idea that Wilford is a “benevolent and merciful” leader and they should be thankful for what he has done for them (Park & Bong, 2013). In both cases, the leaders seemed to be held in high esteem for the people that are occupying well off positions within that society.
The performance of the optoelectronic devices can be improved by enhancing the optical and electrical properties of the TCO films. Much effort is going on in the research to enhance the device properties by improving the quality of the films. Annealing is one such effort to improve the crystallinity of the TCO films which can directly influence the quality of the film. It is well known that the material phases and compositions are highly dependent on the temperature under which they are held, as well as how long they are held there. The post annealing treatment can be used to improve the physical properties of the films because it could crystallize the amorphous portions of the film or it may reorient the existing crystallites.
INTRODUCTION “What’s it going to be then, eh?” It is hard to improve upon Anthony Burgess’ classic opening line to his masterpiece. With this bold, taunting question, A Clockwork Orange’s protagonist, 15-year old Alex, opens the door for our descent into a terrifyingly grim world where ultra-violence and apathy pervade a shocking totalitarian society. The book is partly written in a Russian-influenced argot called nadsat which serves to minimize the horror of the violence depicted. It revolves around a devastatingly simple premise; when state authorities seek to reform young criminals like Alex, Burgess asks- what’s the cost?
Instead of the conflict of the story being between a husband and wife, the conflict is between a mother and a daughter. In the beginning of the story, we can see the obvious conflict between the two. The mother is what one might consider to be strict or abusive or maybe even just tough love. Many times, throughout the story, the mother is said to have hit or choked her daughter. Because of this, the daughter has turned into a disobedient girl and will do anything to go against the wishes of her mother.
Today there has been an increase in the awareness of mental health. In the sense that society has begun to take notice of how mental health effects each individual differently. The media has begun to incorporate a variety of illnesses to entertain to their audience. However, many have questioned if the media is accurately portraying these mental disorders. I chose to compare two popular movies Frankie & Alice and the 2007 version film Sybil.
