Christmass practices in Ethiopia and in the United States There are many different ways of celebrating Christmas both in Ethiopia and America in terms of worship, food and get together. Before a new year, Ethiopians have extra 5 or 6 days called Pagume which is counted as the 13th month. In a Pagume people prepare themselves for the new year. In the early morning they come together at their church, they fast and pray for themselves and their country. Everyone who goes to church dress a white cloth and hold a candle in hand. Dabo is a large and very thick circular bread made of wheat flour which is eaten only on special occasions associated with religious festivals. Teji is made from fermented honey and a locally produced shrub called Gesho. Jabana buna is a coffee boiled in the traditional clay pot. Ethiopian peoples are eating together in the same basket table. No one stands up until the food in the basket finished and lifted away. Eating together implies a close relationship and obligation to support each other. Before eating they pray and bless the food.After they ate they give thanks for God. However American peoples eat their food on their own plate and they don't pray before a meal or after a meal.Whereas, Americans celebrate Christmas in the days or week before Christmas.They organize the special meal. Eat roast turkey, They arrange meals, shelter and different charitable projects for homeless or poor people. there is high advertising about Christmas by Tv. Americans have black Friday on sale.They decorate their houses with lights, spend more money in buying gifts for each other. Meanwhile, Ethiopians Celebrate the holy day on its exact date. They have no black Friday, they don't decorate their home with the lights, but they drop a bunch of grass in the house for the festival
