There is a real shortage among teachers across the United States for both general

education teachers and special education teachers. There are several reasons why Some

of the concerns are similar. The one number reason for most is the economy. Teachers

feel as if they are being asked for more and more. The Common Core and the battle to

keep it going has put a strain on teachers trying to keep up with new standards and

testing.

There are many challenges being a new teacher as I have encountered in changing

positions from an Assistant teacher to a Group teacher.

I have for the past

few years decided to do tutoring as a second job not only economic reasons but also to

help struggling students. Many teachers turn to a second job to make ends meet. I am at

this point but keeping within the Teachers who enter teaching field sometimes feel they

are not being paid enough and sometimes take on other jobs to help with income. I have

them in these challenging classrooms. General school teachers have the help they need

There are other incentives to look at also, like Knowledge

and skills-based pay where teachers earn increases for acquiring new skills and applying

them in their teaching. This goes into the monthly professional development workshop

which my school held monthly. In public school settings teachers can earn Performance

pay according to improvements in students’ performance measured by standardize testing

and evaluations. The last is School-based performance pay where all professional staffs

in schools earn a bonus if students meet particular goals.

There are similarities for both special education teachers and general education issues

but special education teachers have to deal with the different student challenging

behaviors and disabilities which require several individual modifications to a lesson plan

quite much more work than a general educations work load. The solution to this is to

make sure everything is dated and prepared in a timely matter.
