Two interesting genres are short stories and dramas. Both genres are very similar in the elements they contain. For example, both short stories and plays contain a setting, theme, plot, characters, have a set point of view, and usually a conflict. However, these genres differ in the author’s purpose, the literary experience gained from it, and the overall format of each. One short story “A jury of her Peers”, written by Susan Glaspell, correlates with the play or drama called “Trifles”, also written by Susan Glaspell. Plays are meant to be heard and visually seen by the audience. Short stories however, are read and the reader has the absolute control of picturing the characters and scenery. With plays, the audience can see the emotion of the characters through facial expressions, body language and the overall mood by what is being acted out. In short stories, there are specified details given to provide readers with an idea of what occurred or how a character felt during a specific moment of the story. For example, in the short story “A Jury of her Peers”, Mrs. Peters was described as a small thin woman who did not appear as a sheriff’s wife. In the play “Trifles” however, the audience was able to see Mrs. Peters which was an actress to fit the description. Also, plays are continuous whereas short stories can be stopped at any moment. For example, if one were attending a play and decided they wanted a drink during the play, the play will not be paused or stopped, whereas one could simply use a bookmark or highlighter to pick up where they left off. The language in plays and short stories differ in the context used throughout. Plays are written with the movement of the characters indicating where the character moves on stage. In short stories, there are movements of characters, but it is not as specific as plays are because short stories are not written to be
