“Too many people have spent money they haven’t earned to pay off a house they’ll never live in and buy things they don’t want to impress people they don’t like.” These words have become the creed by which society lives. The novel “Death of a Salesman” describes the main character, Willy Loman and his challenge to come to terms with his current life and all that he has accomplished. Through out the novel it can be seen that Willy is contemplating his life choices and their outcomes, all the while becoming consumed by a sense of self-insecurity and judgment brought upon by the pressure of generalised ideals and expectations of society for which he has yet to live up to. Willy believes whole heartedly in what he considers the promise of the American Dream – that a “well liked” and “personally attractive” man in the business world will indubitably and deservedly acquire the material comforts offered by modern American life. Oddly, his fixation with superficial qualities of attractiveness and likeability is at odds with a more gritty and rewarding understanding of the American Dream, that identifies hard work without complaint as the key to success.
