Considering the time in which A Doll House was written, there is no doubt that it offended most. Nora’s decision to leave her perfect life as a doll behind definitely confused audiences. Many critics were outraged by the thought of a woman leaving her family, in an act of selfishness, to go out into the world in search of herself. But could this story have ended any other way? Due to the time period and social norms of society, Ibsen’s original ending was inevitable. A Doll House ends with Nora slamming the door on the only life she knew.
