Dariush Mehrjui, the director and scriptwriter of Sara, played a major role in the development of the new Iranian cinema. For 30 years his films have won critical acclaim both within Iran and internationally.

In Iran, Islamic censorship authorities do not consider film aesthetics that had a great impact on feminist film theory. Instead, they focus on the problems of presentation of women in cinema and making taboos which bring the notion of cinema into question.
