Ibsen repeatedly uses letters in A Doll’s House to drive the plot. These communications uncover the nastier truth of the events of the play surrounding Torvald and Nora that they try to keep covered through their verbal lies and deceit. The two main letters in the play are written by Krogstad. In his first, he exposes Nora’s secret of forging her father’s signature on the loan to her husband. In the latter, Krogstad takes back the threat of exposing the misdeed. That first letter acts as the first push that sends the house of cards tumbling down around Nora and Torvald.
