A Dream Differed The definition of a dream is an aspiration, ambition, or ideal. What dreams do you have? Are you working towards them, or are they slowly changing? The poem A Dream Differed by Langston Hughes is a poem that was written in the 1950s. This poem talks about the different things that can happen to a dream that is changed. The poem A Dream Differed shows that a changed dream may not that bad. Langston Hughes is a famous African American poet who wrote in the early 1900s. He is best known for his Harlem renaissance writing. He wrote poems that could connect to the different things that were going around him at that period. According to the article “Who Was Langston Hughes?” Langston Hughes was esteemed the “Shakespeare in Harlem”. Even though he was a famous writer, that doesn’t necessarily mean that he did not have any other dreams. At that time African Americans were not treated equally. Often during this time, they did not have the same opportunities as the Whites. African Americans mainly has jobs that were not appealing. They mainly worked as maids, waiters, rail road workers, and farm workers, just to name a few. These jobs were not what most people dream of. In A Dream Differed it says, “Dose it stink like rotten meat?” The African American dreams were often not fulfilled so that would just sit untouched. Although this may seem bad.
