The novel “A Farewell To Arms” is a story about Frederic Henry written by Ernest Hemingway. Henry meets a nurse named Catherine Barkley. It tells about their love story, and the challenges they endure during World War 1. This novel uses Symbolism and Themes to tell Frederic Henry’s story. Alcohol is used as a way to cope and bring out a character’s feelings, war is used to represent how brutal, instinct of survival and how it can bring out the worst in a person and the rain is used as a way to portray and foreshadow death are all common symbols used by Hemingway. A theme that Hemingway uses a lot is love between Henry and Catherine. Hemingway shows that symbols and themes can have an impact on a character and the tone of the story. Hemingway uses alcohol as a way for the characters to cope with many things such as war and pain.The use of alcohol can also bring out a characters true feelings for someone. When Henry was injured he drank to get away and take his mind off of the pain he was feeling in his leg. It may have been for only a moment but it allowed henry to cope with his current situation. Alcohol also brought out the true feeling henry had for Catherine. “ I had treated seeing Catherine very lightly, I had gotten somewhat drunk and had nearly forgotten to come but when I could not see her there I was feeling lonely and hollow.” This shows that the alcohol magnified Henry’s true feelings for catherine . Hemingway uses alcohol as a way to set the tone of the story, it gives us a better look into a characters feelings and how they cope with a certain situation.
