In the novel, ‘A Gathering Light’ one main idea Jennifer Donnelly shows us through the book is how women are suffering from oppression. In 1906, a young girl named Mattie Gokey lives in North Woods with a dream to become a writer. Through Mattie 's journey, she challenges to overcome what the society expects her to do and not do as a woman, and the people around her who thinks her goals are absurd and the unfairness of gender roles.
