Social construction is ideas and beliefs created and accepted by people in society. The ideas and beliefs define meanings, notions, or connotations to specific objects or events from the environment and behavior in which relationship or interaction have been established. The meanings or notions are natural in nature and obvious to people. Social constructions are neither static nor objectively defined. They vary from society to society and change over time. Furthermore, a social problem depends on four components, which are a socially created, social pattern, violations of core values, and negatively impacts those in power (Korgen & Furst, 2012). Some social problems are discrimination, bias illiteracy, and crime. Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. Bias is the prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair: The doll testing was profoundly disturbing in the video of “A Girl Like Me” by Mediathatmatters (2007). The test used two doll. One doll was white and one doll was black. The test had two question which are as followed: Which doll is good?, Which doll is bad?. The answer was the same with all kids that were tested. The white doll is good and the black doll is bad. When ask why was the white doll good and the black doll bad? All children said because of the skin color. I found the example compelling to social construction because agents of socialization have such a big influence to the development of social understanding on what is good and bad. The video demonstrated that moral development is not as important as the ideas and beliefs created and accepted by people in society. The knowledge of moral development of society’s norms and value are hidden. I found the video useful in improving my personal development on how and why I must implement correct moral discernment to correct generational development to specific issues like social
