What make´s a father a Good father, In the Book The Glass Castle, by Jeanette Walls, a memoir, there is a family of 6 and their father and husband Rex has been argued to be a lousy father and even questioned if he should have custody of his kids. In this essay, I will be showing and proving with evidence that Rex Walls is a fit father for his family. Rex was always a little laid back and he also has had numerous alcohol issues, having issues like that while in poverty, isn't a way to get out of helping your family but Rex doesn't seem to let that bother him. He's always moving his family around and trying to keep them safe, he even takes them and runs from the federal government. Rex did set a bad example for his children many times, like his alcohol issue and his love for liquor. He also ran from the government but taught his kids life lessons along the way. His daughter Jeanette had an accident where she caught on fire, ¨I felt a blaze on my right side. I turned to see where it was coming from and realized my dress was on fire.¨( 9 ) She then caught all the way and her mother rushed into the room to help her. She was later taken to the hospital but only got a little care. Rex rushed her out of the hospital so he didnt have to pay. He took her out of the hospital and took care of her himself. He gave them many life lessons although that was not a good one. He told Jeanette ¨if you dont want to sink, you better learn how to swim¨. (66) Rex was always manipulative and he abused his power with that. When they were on the move, Rex had gotten a uhaul truck for all their belongings but he made his kiddos sit in the back because there wasn't enough room. He has many good traits and he's even a very good electrician he just can't keep a job because of his alcoholic issues. He makes do with what he has and always keeps his kids going on the right step. When Jeanette was old enough to be on her own she wanted to start a new life in new york, but she had to convince Rex to let her live the life she wanted. Once he had given in after all the memories and longevity of their family he knew that one day she would be on her own and he told her “Go ahead and build the glass castle, but dont do it for me”(238). She had listened to him and done it. She succeeded and made the best of her life and eventually met a man she wanted to marry. She knew her father was not fond of it. She told her siblings and they kept it a secret for her. Rex always wanted the best for his kids even if he set a bad example at times while they were growing up. He always made sure they knew the next step even if it was running from the bill collectors or following a bad path. He even gave Jeanette the nickname of a mountain goat because of her ability to withstand hardships. The saddest part is when Jeanette is in the taxi going home from her meeting and she sees her mother and father digging through the trash. They were digging in the trash to survive.
