“The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” written by Katherine Anne Porter, is about a grandmother who is in denial that she is about to die. And “A Good Man is Hard to Find” written by Flannery O’Connor, is about a family that goes to visit family in Tennessee but are brutally murdered before they get there. These two stories share many similarities and differences in both the characters, and conflict.
In a "Good Man Is Hard to Find" by Flannery O 'Connor, the contrast of good and evil is not as evident as it appears on the surface. The road that the family in the story travels symbolizes good up until the point the grandmother all but forces the family to make a detour onto a dirt road that leads to their demise. She is the unlikely antagonist in the story. A serial killer named, The Misfit, is the protagonist despite his homicidal actions. Both characters in the story help to illustrate how a relationship with God is perceived good and sacrilegious behavior is perceived evil.

The grandmother not mentioned that she knew he was an escaped convict; perhaps the family might have walked away from what becomes certain death. It is under these circumstances, having told the Misfit to pray and be changed, that the grandmother ultimately knows that nothing can save her. She sees that the two of them are connected in the way they see the world—but not through any sense of goodness.

“A Good Man is Hard to Find” narrates a story of a manipulative grandmother who always enforces a “moral code” on her family members. When her son, Bailey, announces a family vacation to Florida, the grandmother “[seizes] at every chance to change” his mind because she desires to “visit some of her connections” (137) in Tennessee instead. She reveals her crafty, “snake-like” nature as she “[rattles] the newspaper at [Bailey’s] bald head,” telling him about a murderer who “calls himself The Misfit” (137). When Bailey does not react, the grandmother “[wheels] around… and [faces] the children’s mother” (137). Realizing that the news of the Misfit will not influence the family into changing their travel plans, the grandmother devises a new tactic.

In this story, O'Connor uses their southern gothic style to create multiple themes that can leave room for self-interpretation. The grandmother, the unnamed protagonist, does not think they should go on vacation to Florida when the Misfit is rumored to be heading there. However, the family decides to go regardless. The grandmother is the first in the car with her precious cat, "Pitty Sing," secretly stowed away.

The story opens as a man named Bailey wants to take his family (his wife, a baby, and two kids, John Wesley and June Star) for a vacation to Florida but the grandmother (bailey’s mother) wants to go to east Tennessee instead of Florida to visit some of her connections. She tries to persuade her son to change his mind using the news of escape of the Misfit, a prisoner who has escaped from the prison and headed to Florida. However, the religious virtues effect both personas and in itself draws the line around them mutually as sinners. Both characters have a particular relationship with Jesus, a physical crisis crossed with a spiritual crisis and different conceptions of reality; thus, revealing how the portrayal of these characters are not what may seem.
