Flannery O’Connor’s most famous book, A Good Man is Hard to Find, relays a theme of good vs evil, while Everything That Rises Must Converge is a book that communicates a contrasting moral of reality vs perception overall. Her goresome writing style was mainly influenced by religious themes (from being born in a Catholic household) and vivid imagery, which led to an effective grasp of the repulsive, ironic world. Flannery O’Connor has a specific grotesque, messed up, and gorey “style” that is interesting to read and her writing style adds uniqueness and adds a “piece of her” to the things that she writes. At times she characterizes their appearance, like in Everything That Rises Must Converge, while in other books she characterizes personality, such as in A Good Man is Hard to Find. In both of the books, there is really no TRUE protagonist that stays consistent in their role. At the beginning, the Grandmother of A Good Man is Hard to Find creates mystery and tries to scare the children by talking about the Misfit, who had broken out of jail and was starting to kill people again. This dialog creates a foreshadow that they will soon come to meet the Misfit, coming across misfortune and death. The Grandmother in A Good Man is Hard to Find is interpreted to be the protagonist in the beginning but you soon start to realize that she is shallow and selfish, only death can bring the goodness out of her. The antagonist in A Good Man is Hard to Find is the Misfit. In the end, the Grandmother reaches out to the Misfit, thinking that he’s one of her children. But the Misfit rejects the affection and shoots her, and she dies smiling. This act from the Misfit makes him the true antagonist.
