In the account of “A good Man Is Hard to Find,” grandma shows her true colors throughout the story. She is convinced that she is morally right and just through her thoughts and actions. She portrays herself as better than the rest and a lady. However, in the end the grandmother tells the Misfit he is just like one of her own. This reference shows that in her final moments of life the grandmother realized they were very much alike. They share some of the same character traits such as being deceitful, insouciant, and egocentric. The first glimpse into the grandmother’s deceitfulness is when she tries to talk Bailey into changing the trip destination to Tennessee. Even though she wasn’t up for going to Florida she made sure to be the first to jump in the car when it was time to go. She even managed to get the cat in the car when she knew bailey did not want him along. She hid him and how she really felt. The next time we see her true colors is when she recalls the plantation she visited once as a young girl. While driving through Georgia, the grandmother longs to see it again and tells the family it has a secret panel that was a hiding spot for a pile of silver. In her mind she admits it is a lie. A prime example is when the Misfit’s buddies take her son Bailey and grandson in to the wood and shoot them. She doesn’t try to stop them or tell them to take her instead. Her main concern is trying to convince the Misfit that he is good and was not the type of person to shoot a lady. These actions correlates with her mentality that ladies are more worthy. She also does not try to save her daughter-in-law or other grandkids when it comes time for them to enter in to the woods to meet their doom.
