The history of Stoicism began in antiquity Rome and Greece. Stoicism was one of the most prominent schools of philosophy in ancient times. Its influence continues still today. Stoicism originated around 300B.C.E. in Athens and was founded by Zeno of Citium. The e-book, Stoicism, written by John Sellers, he says, “according to ancient biographical tradition, Zeno traveled to Athens in his twenties, while visiting a bookstall he discovered a copy of Xenophon’s Memorabilia of Socrates”, this began his philosophical education. He started by studying and practicing Cynicism, an ancient philosophy which advocated a frugal lifestyle. Ethics was a basic contemporary version of Cynicism, the physics portion was influenced by Plato with a rational and passive belief, and the logic included what we refer to as formal logic or the theory of knowledge. Virtue, which Zeno referred to as a kind of wisdom, was also a base of his thoughts. Stoicism began in a changing world, where their current ways of thinking were no longer appropriate. Urban Dictionary says this about Stoicism, “Stoics do have emotions, but only for the things in this world that really matter. They are the most real people alive.” Although this is not a philosophical source the words still hold true relevance.
