Prologue

Running through the trees, only one emotion could be felt. Fear. A dark icy feeling of impending doom.
He could neither think nor stop.
All he could do was run.
Wet jungle branches relentlessly slapped at his face.
He only knew two things.
Close behind there was danger and forward lied the unknown.
Ahead a light began to push it’s way through the foliage.
As he ran, the light became closer.
Then he leaped into the light in full surrender with a meager hope of the safety it might provide.

Chapter One

“Ouch!” Rowan yelped after waking and banging his head on the irritatingly shallow ceiling of the attic. The sensation was all too familiar, as he had done this nearly everyday since he started helping out at the barn. His father, Borin, had …show more content…

The rush of adrenaline when he let an arrow fly was immeasurably thrilling. Unfortunately, Borin needed someone to work at the barn, and he happened to be that someone. As a result everyday was similar and repetitive.
Then his thoughts wandered toward his dream. Had that really been a dream? The jungle had seemed so real. He felt as if it was an actual place. Why had he been so afraid, and what had he been afraid of?
He decided to take his mind off of his dream, and turned his attention towards his surroundings. The attic was relatively bare and only had one window which was scarcely large enough to peek out at the falling snow. In the center of the room stood a makeshift fireplace consisting of a small wood fire surrounded by stones from outside and a small hole in the roof to release the smoke. Several piles of hay had been pushed aside, so that they would not catch fire. By his straw bed lied a clay jar filled with drinking water.
As he gazed into the water rowan examined his reflection. His brown hair was as shaggy as ever. Remnants of acne scattered across his face. His lack of facial hair made him appear much younger than he really
