The human race has contantly changed throughout time. In the book, A History of the World in 6 Glasses, Tom Standage explains the how the six most popular drinks affected people. These drinks helped give an insight about human history. From 600 BCE-600 CE and 1900-present, social and cultural similarities and differences are interpreted through two drinks known as wine and coke. First off, one of the most prevalent themes is the development and interaction of cultures. As time progressed, human interaction became more and more common. The early humans learned from each other and exchanged part of their cultures. Coke and wine were both rejected by muslims. Christians loved to drink wine, and it was closely associated with them (85). On the other hand, muslims could not drink wine because of their faith. As human interaction grew, people developed social classes like the rich and poor. Wine and Coke was available to everyone. Everyone could drink wine because of the different kinds of wine (wine made out of dates for the poor and wine made out of grapes for the rich). Wine was so widely accessible that even slaves drank it (54-55). Coke was only five cents, and it had no alcohol so everyone could drink it even kids (247). Although everyone could drink these beverages, poor people couldn’t afford the “nice” wines. The richest people drank the finest wines while poor people drank worse wines(77). This split the rich people from the poor and the poorer people/people in poor areas were judged when they bought fine wines. On the other hand, at only five cents, coke is a consistent drink that is cheap enough for everyone to enjoy. Coke brought people together and people from any social class could enjoy it with one
