The podcast A Latino History of Hip Hop delivered by, two of Latino USA producers, Daisy Rosario and Marlon Bishop focused on the rise of Hip Hop culture within the Latino community. In this podcast both Rosario and Bishop interview many of the first Latino artist that have had an impact in at least one of the four elements of Hip Hop: Mcing, Djing, break dancing and graffiti. It was important for Rosario and Bishop to conduct this series of interviews because not only does it show that other races besides African Americans have an influence on Hip Hop, but also showed that Hip Hop is much more complex than just being another music genre. She is concern that the majority of mainstream Hip Hop songs are solely focused on glorifying topics such as sexism, living the gangster life, violence, and the demeaning of women. Rose is concern that as sexist, homophobic, and violent Hip Hop continues to become more accessible, as corporations increase its airplay, it could become the sole image that many people would associate the African American community as a whole, therefore misrepresenting them in a negative light within society as a whole leading to increasing amounts of oppression. Rose believes that conversations should be had and the route of mainstream hip hop should change towards a more innovative, informative, and influential path. It should welcome artist such as lupe Fiasco, an artist that doesn't make music that nourishes these negative images. In the article Michaels refers the real to life, society, and our history while the imaginary is all the novels, tv shows, and movies. He explains how our realities are not always represented in our fiction, therefore falsely representing our society to the public. Professor Michaels specifically indicates how the neoliberal society is misrepresented within our fiction; it is represented in a much better form than what it really is. He indicates American Psycho and Beloved as his two different forms of fiction that represent his beliefs between reality and the imaginary. He believes that American Psycho captures what is going on, at least critiques the current economic classes, therefore making it good art, while in the other hand he considers beloved bad art because it was created to please the upper class therefore not illustrating the realities of society as a whole. Michaels beliefs fiction should be able to represent the realities of everyone within our society instead of just those in the top one percent, but also focus on what is happening now.
