I read A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest L. Gained during my eleventh grade year. Jefferson was a young black man, who was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. I first found the book a little boring. Once I was assigned to read chapter after chapter for homework I found it a little more interesting but then again the book itself lost my attention I really didn't care for Grant and Vivian’s relationship all I wanted to know was, what was going on with Jefferson and what was going to happen to him; was he going to die? I tried skipping pages but once I did I had to start over because I was confused. Once I was done with the book I was upset and left with a lot of questions.
Sidenote: I was thrilled when A Lesson before dying was turned into a film, the film made me see things more clear and the actors the director pick for the movie made the film more sorrowful and dramatic. My favorite thing about the book is there are two african american men that have given up hope for their lives, and for humanity in general. Just like if my I stole something from the store instead of my friend I would have been the one that would have got the police called on. All because I’m black and she was white or should I say mix, but she looked white to the store clerk and that’s all that matter to people is skin color even when you walk into a expensive store and have everyone stare or follow you around because they think you're going to
