What if Bud from Christopher Paul Curtis novel Bud, Not Buddy had lived not in 1936 but 70 years later, in 2006? How different would Bud's life been? If Bud had lived in 2006 instead of 1936 during the Depression, Bud could have lived a life the complete opposite of the one he did live. Bud may not have had to deal with the pain of losing his mother so young, worry about going hungry, or dealing with unfair segregation laws.

In Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis readers her a story about a ten year- old boy named Bud and his journey to finding a forever home. Bud's story takes place in 1936 during the Depression and segregation. Bud may only be ten but he's bouncing around from foster home to foster home where he's treated poorly. He runs away from his foster in search of a man he believes to be his father only to find a cranky old man who turns out to be his grandfather. For example, If Bud lived in 2006, he may never have had to lose his mother to an illness. Bud's mother became very sick fast and died only after six days. Back in 1936 single black mothers wouldn’t have been able to get health insurance as easy as today. In 2006, Bud's mother would have had the chance to get seen by a doctor at least once a year. She would have had better and more advance medicine, and there would have been hospitals for emergencies. Access to all of this in 1936 could have helped her not
