Given that, respond to this scenario: you are in charge of your own city. List three strategies to make you city more environmentally sustainable. Explain each strategy. “Green urbanism is a conceptual model that seeks to transform and re-engineer existing city districts...It promotes the development of a socially and environmentally sustainable city” Doršner. (2015) Any measures to make my city more environmentally sustainable must endure and to achieve that, they must be based on the three main pillars of Green Urbanism. The work required within each pillar is explained below: 1. Urban planning and transport - A huge Bus Rapid Transit system is already in place, and transportation of people across the city has improved significantly. New infrastructure is being built; new roads and bridges for the new BRT system which continues ease traffic congestion, housing for the lower and middle classes, and the construction of sidewalks to encourage walking and to reduce car use. 2. Energy and Materials – being near the equator, there is great potential for my city to use renewable power sources, i.e. solar energy, as the city gets 5 peak sunlight hours on average …show more content…
Water and biodiversity is the area where a number of changes would be introduced. I would create giant reservoirs of stored rainwater across the city – we witness close to six months of moderate to heavy rainfall annually, and being able to store and process this water means that an additional supply of clean water is available to households and home farms. – “Human beings require only about 1 gallon per day to survive.” Doršner, (2015), therefore water education becomes important so as to teach conservation practices. This will put less pressure on the traditional sources of water, which would remain the main source of clean water for the city. Communities become sanitary and instances of water-borne diseases and infant mortality will reduce, and hygienic surroundings will minimize outbreaks of
