Sometimes it can be difficult overcoming grueling challenges. The book A Long Walk to Water is written by Linda Sue Park and is a historical nonfiction book about a young boy named Salva. In Sudan there was an awful war that killed many. He was in school when war first struck and he was sent to the bush. After this Salva has faced many challenges fighting to survive. The Cremation of Sam Mcgee is a long poem written by Robert W. Service. This poem is about Sam McGee and his friend cap. After finding out about the Canadian gold rush they had traveled to Northwestern Canada. It was freezing and Sam knew he was going to die of the cold. Salva was all alone in a war after being left in a barn. Salva was tired, hungry, and weak. He met a thoughtful older lady that shared some food with him and let him stay in her barn. Salva worked day after day hoping he wouldn't be sent out of the barn with no food or water. “He worked hard so she would not send him away. For three days, he fetched firewood from the bush and water from the pond.” If it wasn't for Salvas strength he would not have a roof over his head during some of the war. In addition to Salva another person that showed strength was Sam Mcgee. Sam Mcgee was dying of the cold and his last wish to his friend Cap was to be cremated. Cap really didn't want to cremate his friend but he wanted to fulfill his last wish. He was strong and did not refuse. “Well, he seemed so low that I couldn't say no”.If it wasn't for Cap's strength he wouldn't have fulfilled his friend's last wish. Both Salva and Cap needed Determination to get through challenges. Salva and others made it to the Refugee camp in Ethiopia and stayed there for six years. By the time Salva turned 17 he and the others were kicked out of the camp and forced to cross the Gilo River. After he and others had crossed the river Salva thought walking south to Kenya would be best and others started following. After he had noticed that he was their leader, he grew determined to lead the group to Kenya safely. “I will get us safely to Kenya, he thought. No matter how hard it is.” If it wasn't for Salvas' determination he and thousands of others wouldn't have made it to Kenya safely. Cap was going crazy after Sam Mcgee died. He would believe that Sam's dead body was talking and grinning. Cap was depressed and not mentally stable and fighting the stinging cold. But Cap's determination helped him fulfill Sam's last wish. To be cremated. “Now a promise made is a debt unpaid '' If it wasn't for Caps determination he would have found himself with a last wish unpaid that he had promised. If it wasn't for the determination that Salva and Cap gained they would have ended up not getting through their
