Many people have learned about the Holocaust throughout the years, but learning about it from a primary source is a whole different experience. A scary journey that turned out to be the Holocaust has been told by two individuals that survived. These two stories tell the reader what life was like and what they went through. Even though the conditions were terrible, both Eli and Lina were able to survive and break away through fear, horrendous experiences, and hope that lead them to surviving and leaving people they cared about behind.
In Night, one is faced with silence and negligence from the world. While being unwillingly evacuated from his home, Eliezer’s friends and neighbours stayed inside and watched as their former companions marched to their impending death. As Eliezer noted, “from behind their windows, from behind their shutters, our fellow citizens watched as we passed.’ (Eliezer Wiesel, 19) The Hungarian civilians watched in silence too naive and confused to approach the German military and help the Jewish people.
The book Night by Ellie Wiesel, gives the account of a teenage boy going through the horrendous events of the Holocaust with his father by his side, though this is one of the many accounts of the Holocaust it is crucial to society that we learn the lesson behind it. The lesson to learn from this horrifying event, is to accept all humans for who they are and not be prejudice against their religion or race. In the dissection of section one of Night the readers can spot how blind the Jews of Sighet are to Hitler’s cruelty and power. The Jews are so blind they would not even believe when one of their own Moishe the Beadle, who was captured by the Hungarian Police and then forced into cattle cars and forced to dig a mass grave.
During a time of great struggle, there is no doubt that the event will cause the person to change. In something so horrible and traumatizing as the Holocaust, where the Nazi soldiers inflicted so much fear on the Jews, there is no doubt they would feel forced to change in order to survive. Since the Nazis committed such heinous crimes, the victims of the holocaust began to deny their faith, go against their morals in order to survive the stress, and their physical appearances changed due to the little food the Nazi’s gave them in the Concentration camp. The Holocaust is a destruction on a massive scale, it was significant part of today’s history because it teaches people how and where genocide can take place in. Although, the violence was targeted towards the Jewish people, non-Jewish people were also killed during this traumatizing event of world history. The memoir Night by Eliezer Wiesel tells the story about Elie’s Holocaust experiences. In his story, Elie experiences and encounters several relationships involving himself and other characters. The theme relationships are essential for physical and psychological survival are shown throughout the book when situations involving Mrs. Schächter, Stein, and Elie occur.
There were over 23 concentration camps that killed Jews over the course of the Holocaust, Over 6 million Jews died. In the book “Night” by Elie Wiesel he shares his traumatic experience during the holocaust and how he and his dad navigated concentration camps. In comparison Anne Frank's “The diary of a young girl” talks about how she and her family had a safe place to hide while others were dying. In both books we can see that the main character's environment shapes their behaviors and beliefs, Even though both characters went through the holocaust differently they were still both highly affected.
Elie Wiesel’s true story Night, is an intriguing story about the Holocaust. The guards and even veteran prisoners are cruel to others. The punishments, even for tiny faults, are unthinkably horrid. Man does not care how old or weak someone is; this makes the children and teens change and act inhumane towards other prisoners, even towards their own family. It clearly, and painfully, explains man’s inhumanity to man.
When Madame exclaims that there’s a fire, Madame is not validated or heard. Rather, Madame is told to "shut up" and then forcibly beaten into silence. Once again, dehumanization is evident in how victims of evil treat one another. Throughout the camps, examples of children abandoning parents, people betraying one another, and internal aloneness dominating human actions until survival is all that remains are examples of dehumanization. These examples show that the Holocaust happened because individuals dehumanized one another.
