A Man With Three Faces Each morning, every person puts on a “face”, a mindset or attitude which becomes the driving force for that person 's day to day activity. These “faces” dictate who we are and who we will become. Through Steven Galloway’s use of a third person omniscient point of view, readers are shown the three faces of war: hope, survival, and vengeance.
As said previously decisions is what dictates the difference between humans. And through these different faces readers are shown the different faces of war. Those seeking to spread hope, those who wish to survive, and those who seek to avenge. The main focal point of the novel is the titular character, The Cellist of Sarajevo. She exemplified hope as she fought for the future of Sarajevo. She showed the face of survival as she defended herself and others against “the men on the hills”. But she brought a new face to the novel, the face of vengeance . Arrows decisions all are influenced by her hatred for “the men on the hills” Arrow says that,
“On days when she doesn’t kill, she feels a loss that reveals a hostility within her that goes deeper than a lack of remorse. It’s almost a lust. She hopes that the rest of the city, hate the men on the hills for the same reason she does. Because they made her hate. They started a war, saying that the people of Sarajevo hated each other, and the people fought back, saying they didn’t, that they were a city without hatred. But then the men on the hills started to kill and mutilate and destroy. They made her, and people like her, hate them” (47).
As Arrow, Alisa’s whole point of living through the war was to get to a place in which “Arrow’ could be laid to rest and Alissa could live, safe from the hatred hidden within the world. Arrow seeks revenge for what was taken away from Alisa. Her motivation is to return the city of Sarajevo to what it once was. A city full of hope, where no one was driven by revenge or
