The play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” written by William Shakespeare, who is most commonly known for his other pieces such as, “Romeo and Juliet,” “Macbeth,” and “Hamlet,” was produced The Olympian High School’s Drama Department’ and directed by Amira Temple and Lexi Medrano at Olympian High School’s Multi-Purpose room on November 13, 2015 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Their production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” seemed to have captured the comedic essence that Shakespeare meant for the play through some of the characters’ movements, speech, and many other elements. The play was about the love between two lovers, Hermia and Lysander who cannot be together because of her father, Egues, wishes for her to marry Demetrius, who is also in love with Hermia, or she will face death, but Demetrius also has a lover, Helena. And this all takes place during the marriage of the Duke of Athens, Theseus, and the Queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta, where, the theatrical group, The Mechanicals, prepare a play for them. Also, most of the comedy seemed to have come from or involed the Mechanicals, especially the actors playing as Nick Bottom and Francis Flute when they were acting as Pyramus and Thisbe. Even though it brought more comedy to the play and laughter to the audience, there was also a lot of improvisation or changes that was brought into a play such as the multiple times that Pyramus stabbed himself and the “twerking” that both Francis Flute and Nick Bottom had done during the play. But, the back colored back lighting and the detailed background helped show the mood and portrayed the setting very well. Also, their type of clothing helped show their status because the Duke and the Queen and Egues were all wearing
