Julie Taymor’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream film adaptation creates a fantastical spin on the well-known Shakespeare play. The director is able to create an effective dream-like setting with the use of projections, lighting, and puppetry. From the beginning, there is a sense of wonder created, as without word or introduction, Puck, played by Kathryn Hunter, glides onto stage and lays down on a mattress supported by branches. Puck is then lifted into the air and a large white sheet consumes the stage. Even for those familiar with the play, such as myself, it immediately commands your mind to travel to the dream world Taymor has created.

The story begins with Hermia refusing to comply with her father Egeus 's wish for her to marry Demetrius. Faced with this dilemma, Hermia and her lover Lysander elope by going into the forest. Hermia tells this to her best friend Helena, but Helena in turn reveals the plan to Demetrius in an attempt to win back his favor.
In William Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, two lovers are bound to death by fate, and the audience is informed of this fact by the large amount of foreshadowing seen throughout the play. In each scene, at least one example of foreshadowing can be seen. This literary device is used to help form the tone of the story and give readers a feeling for what is going to happen next. For example, before the Capulet party, Romeo says that he had a dream, in which he had died, and that his death in the dream was linked to his attending the Capulet party.
A Midsummer Night's Dream seems like only a dream. The plots were twisted and misinterpreted, briefly from my own personal reading. I started wondering "what is going to happen here?" The Commedia Dell' Arte archetypes or stock characters as some refer reveal behaviors in these players of Shakespeare. From other research and my classmates responses, I found that the three worlds are also the three main groups of Commedia Dell' Arte.
However, A Midsummer Night’s Dream offers, “For in the temples, by and by, with us, these couples shall be eternally knit.” This quote shows that each couple will be permitted to be married. Thirdly, the stories differ in the fate of the characters. “Pyramus and Thisbe” states, “I will follow thee in death, for I have been the cause.” This quote shows that both lovers, Pyramus and Thisbe, commit suicide so that they can be together in the afterlife.
The characters in the play are negatively affected by, and are victims to love. Throughout A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare illustrates the idea that love is great; Given many examples throughout the play, though, it is clearly presented that the characters have been victimized by love. Through the play, it is shown that love can lead to a death. For example, Egeus wants the old Athenian law to be put into play, so his daughter will marry Demetrius, who Egeus had chosen for her to marry. “I beg the ancient privilege of Athens,” Egeus whined; She “Shall be either to this gentleman, or to her death, according to our law.”

The language in this time and language portrayed in the performances are very magical and powerful and lead you into a different time period.
What does it mean to dream? Well, I believe dreams will always remain a mystery of phenomenons that science will never be able to explain. However, we can interpret our dreams in many different aspects. Philosophers, such as Alan Watts, interpret dreams in an interesting way, such as it being an adventure (The Dream of Life). From this, I’d like to think of dreams as adventures for our minds; we’re subconsciously wandering to a new adventure every time we decide to rest our eyes.
The interest of an audience is held by themes that are fundamental to the human condition, as these reflect our world and examine human nature. For example, Othello explores themes of jealousy which is still relevant to this day. Therefore most themes in this play have a broad appeal to all people. The lives of a twenty first century audience are substantially different to those of a Shakespearean time but the themes of love, hate and death are timeless.
In conclusion, Act Two Scene One and Two of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” connects to the theme, of love, by showing how unpredictable this emotion is. The scene shows how love can be altered and used as a manipulator to have a horrible affect on characters in the play, and the confusion it can cause for the readers. It can also show how cautious you need to be with love and the good reason to show the importance of
