A Mother’s Heartbreaking Choice Poetry is very multifaceted. What, does that mean? It means, that not only is there different kinds of poetry, but poetry as a whole can tackle many subjects, and can cause the reader, to experience, a wide array of emotions. Poetry can be interesting, it can be inspiring, it can be emotional, and it can provoke unwanted or welcomed memories, or it can possess all, of the aforementioned, qualities. When I read, Ballad of Birmingham by Dudley Randall, I indeed experienced several sentiments. As a parent, most of us, want to shield our children, from the ugliness, of this world. The mother, in Ballad of Birmingham, was no different. I, immediately, saw this, when she told the child, that she could go to church, as an alternative, to joining in a freedom march, that was being patrolled with clubs, hoses, guns and the threats of jail (as cited by Kirszner & Mandell, 2012). This poem was very interesting and memorable. First and foremost, this poem brought, to the forefront, the realization, that just because we think, we are making the right decisions, concerning our children, we, actually, may be killing them.
