In the book Soldier 's heart a young boy named Charley Goddard at age 15 he wants to be in the war. A Long Way Gone Memoirs of a boy soldier is a memoir written by Ishmael Beah. This novel is about Ishmael's first hand experience of the Civil war in sierra leone between Mar 23, 1991 to Jan 18, 2002 .I feel the book gave a genuine glimpse of war and how Ishmael stayed alive as a refugee and showed what he had to do in order to survive in this war. The memoir also showed the corruption of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) who with the support of the Charles Taylor’s National Patriotic Front of Liberia, attempted to overthrow the government. However, a messenger from the RUF said that they were on their side and would like to be welcomed.
In life, it takes bravery to push through hard times. However, in war, it takes an extreme amount of daringness just to survive and help friends survive. In Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers, this gallantry is shown through many of the character’s actions throughout the book. This novel follows the main character, Richie Perry (Perry) and his squad through struggles and successes in the Vietnam War. Perry is a young and inexperienced soldier who finds war to be much more brutal and terrifying than he ever expected.

Due to the way Ishmael Beah talked about his own near death experiences, children who read his book can now have knowledge of war, from a child's perspective. The absurd savagery Ishmael was exposed to, taught him lessons a child like myself should never have to learn. Reading this book has brought light of the many intentional and unintentional consequences of war. Ishmael had been born in Mogwemo, a poor segregated village, like most of the regions in Sierra Leone.
In Guns, Germs, and Steel, Jared Diamond opposed the idea that European civilizations have advanced further than their contemporaries in other continents because their inhabitants were intellectually superior. Instead, he supported the notion that some civilizations developed at a quicker pace than others because of the environmental differences that were present in the continents where they resided. Factors such as wildlife, climate, and the types of resources presented in an area have dramatically affected the growth and development of hunter-gatherer groups into villages, and eventually, nations. Morality can be shown through texts and stories in a number of ways. One story in particular that showed morality as a theme at different points throughout the story was the Ravine by Graham Salisbury. The key instances in the story that show morality as a theme were when Vinny, the main character, wasn't sure if he did the right thing going to the ravine, or if he should've listened to his mother, and stayed home. The second time morality was expressed as a theme was when Vinny also didn't feel comfortable being at the ravine since another teenager about his aged passed away in an accident at the ravine, he was afraid that what happened to the boy might happen to him and his friends. It would be very difficult to make a decision in a split second with the weight of the world on your shoulders. For Chesley Sullenberger, this was reality mid-flight on January fifteenth of 2009, according to the text, “A Hudson River Hero”. He had to decide where to land his jetliner full of passengers after he began facing problems with the engines. The text, “What is Heroism”, states that there are many forms of heroism. For example, Sullenberger displayed his heroism through saving the lives of all of his passengers, risking his own reputation, and staying humble after receiving awards for his heroic flight landing.
Jasper Jones In Jasper Jones, written by Craig Silvey, the main theme is courage. This is demonstrated throughout the text, that bravery is demonstrated not by being heroic instead it is by standing up for oneself or others, especially when there may be a great risk. The three characters that represent bravery the most are Charlie Bucktin, Jasper Jones and Jeffrey Lu. Jasper and Jeffrey are subjected to violence and racism by the parochial town of Corrigan while Charlie is bullied because he is intelligent and academically successful.
Jamie Ford does an amazing job at putting pieces of history in his story to make it seem real. One of the pieces of history was when Ford explained why the Japanese burned almost all of their belongings that tied them back to Japan. " even from a distance, he could see they were scrolls-artwork, written and drawn by hand. Large Japanese characters disappearing into the heart of the fire" (73). The Japanese literally burned photo albums and their clothes and " anything that might connect them to the war with Japan" (73).
Fred Collins is not a hero and does not fit into what a hero needs to be. Though he is not a hero he was able to complete a heroic act. The initial action of getting the water for himself and his companions was futile for the fact that once the water arrived safely it was spilled. But this is not the act in question, his heroic act was giving a dying man his last drink. How a person can perform a heroic act but not be a hero perplexing, and thus may be the mystery of heroism.
