Throughout her poem Emily Dickerson descriptions of the snake definitely held my attention and interest. After reviewing this poem I plan to explore more of Emily Dickerson’s writings. This period was noted for artistic, literary, musical and intellectual movements which began in Europe near the end of the 18th century. Most works during this period was focused on emotional expression, individualism and naturalism. Romantic heroes in the literature took on a different shape than the epic heroes previous periods. During the romantic period Europe’s economy was changed by the Industrial Revolution. People moved from the country to cities for new career opportunities. Due to the large influx of people moving to the city issues with food supply, overcrowding, pollution and poverty became more of a problem. Because of these issues artists and writers began to realize that country versus living in the city allowed them to escape from the issues caused by overcrowding etc. The art pieces during the Romantic movement encompassed numerous themes that were not related to religious faith or rational science. B2: Biographical Insights into the Work Emily Dickerson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1830 and lived there all her life. She began writing at an early age practicing her craft by writing poems she found in books, magazines and newspapers. During a trip to Philadelphia in the early 1850’s; Dickerson fell in love with a married minister, the Reverend Charles Wadsworth; her disappointment in love may have brought her subsequent withdrawal from society. Dickinson experiences an emotional crisis of undetermined nature in the early 1860’s. Her traumatized state of mind is believed to have inspired her to write prolifically: in 1862 alone she is thought to have composed over three hundred poems. The natural world is portrayed vividly throughout Dickerson’s poem “A Narrow Fellow in the Grass”. This poem closely examines one of nature’s most infamous creatures, the snake.
